When to Wear a Jumpsuit
As you can tell from the selections above, jumpsuits can be worn in many places. Whether you’re having a lazy day at home, hitting the gym, or attending a wedding, there’s a jumpsuit for you.
One place I wouldn’t recommend jumpsuits is in traditional work environments. The dressier ones almost always cross the line into evening wear, making them inappropriate for conservative offices.
Of course, many women simply don’t like jumpsuits because of the bathroom factor. I understand! Getting fully undressed every time you run to the loo can be annoying. If being topless in a public facility bothers you, try wearing a camisole under your jumpsuit.
Even with the frustrating bathroom issue, the right jumpsuit is worth it. You get the easy styling of a dress with the comfort and coverage of pants.
Where to Wear a Jumpsuit
Like dresses, jumpsuits can be worn nearly anywhere. Keep the tone and style of your jumpsuit in mind. For example, a striped, linen jumpsuit is perfect for casual activities like shopping, running errands, or strolling near a beach. A silky jumpsuit can be an elegant option for a wedding guest look. For casual activities involving children, denim and utility jumpsuits are a great choice.
How a Jumpsuit Should Fit
As with everything in fashion, fit is everything. No matter how fabulous the jumpsuit is, if it doesn’t fit you correctly it simply won’t look good.
Below are some things to consider when checking the fit of a jumpsuit.
- Check that your side seams appear straight and are perpendicular to the floor. If your side seam is pulling towards the front or the back, this normally means you need a larger size.
- Lift your arms and check that the armhole sits in a comfortable position under your arm. If it’s digging in, size up. If it’s too loose and showing your bra line, size down.
- Check that your bust, waist, and hip lines are in the correct position for you and are all parallel to the floor. If any of these lines are in the incorrect position, you will need to hem or let out the jumpsuit. If you need to add or remove more than 3 inches, skip it.
- Check the front and back crotch are not too tight or too loose. This can be an expensive alteration, so it’s usually not worth it to purchase a piece with this issue.
- Move around! Sit up, walk, jump, and sit down. If you’re not feeling comfortable with certain movements, that’s a sign it doesn’t fit.
Fortunately, there are a few things a tailor can fix if there’s a slight issue. For example, if the shoulder straps are too long, they can be taken up. If the legs are a couple of inches too long, they can be hemmed. If the bust is popping open constantly, that be stitched to stay securely closed. However, if excessive tailoring is needed for the jumpsuit to fit you, skip it.
Final Thoughts on the Best Jumpsuits
If you find the right fit, jumpsuits are incredibly flattering. There are certain style elements that will look great on everyone. And jumpsuits work for so many activities! Whether you’re running around a playground with your kids, attending a wedding, or having a girl’s night out, there’s a jumpsuit for you.
As always, I will continue to add to this list whenever I come across more fabulous jumpsuits.
