Denim is an inherently casual fabric, so it’s quite easy to dress down a denim dress. I’ve paired my denim dress with neutral sandals and an off-white bag. The lighter color accessories keep this dress on the casual side.

Outfit Idea #1: Pair your denim dress with light accessories. Try shoes and bags in the white, cream, beige, and tan color family. See my photo above for reference.
Outfit Idea #2: For another casual denim dress look, you could pair a denim dress with white sneakers and no-show socks.
Outfit Idea #3: A third option involves mixing your athleisure with your denim. A denim dress can look great paired with a nylon belt bag and a coordinating baseball cap. This could be a flattering, functional look for visiting a zoo, a park, or any activity with kids. A pair of classic sneakers would complete this outfit.
Outfit Idea #4: If you’re under 35, a simple white tee can look great layered under a sleeveless denim dress. Add a pair of Chuck Taylors and a mini backpack. If you’re older, I’ve personally found this can look a bit juvenile.
Outfit Idea #5: While I’m wearing a white leather bag, denim dresses also pair well with woven totes and rattan basket bags. When doing this type of pairing, grab a wide-brim hat to keep up with the laid-back beachy vibes.

On the opposite end of the style spectrum, you can certainly turn a casual denim dress into a night-out-worthy look.

In my case, I switched out my shoes and my bag. I kept all of my other accessories the same. I traded my tan slides for black block heel sandals. Instead of my white crossbody, I employed my black top handle bag.
Outfit Idea #6: Adding a black heel and a top handle bag can take a denim dress from day to night.
How to Dress Up Your Denim in the Fall
Since I live in San Diego and our summer has arrived fashionably late, it’s very hot here. I plan to wear this dress without any additional layers through October.
But one thing I love about denim dresses is they transition so easily into fall.
Outfit Idea #7: I plan on layering a black long-sleeve tee under this once the weather dips below 70. For that look, I will pair my denim dress with tall black boots.
One style tip to keep in mind is to pair taller boots with shorter dresses. This creates a flattering, leg-lengthening effect. Since I’m 5’3 on a good day, I need all the help I can get to appear taller.
Outfit Idea #8: My final style tip for dressing up a denim dress is to add a blazer. Make sure it’s not a workwear style. You’ll need an oversized, trendier cut. Layer this over your denim dress. For this to work, your blazer should be slightly longer than the hem of your dress. This pairing looks best with tall boots or a platform heel.

From Free People, this is a fun, feminine, and flattering denim dress. Currently, it’s on sale for less than $100 at Bloomingdale’s. It’s tight in the chest, so skip this one if you’re busty. Other than that, it runs true to size.
Circus NY Halter Open Back Denim Dress
This fun denim dress is under $100. It’s available on Amazon. Note that this is a halter style with an open back.
7 for All Mankind Denim Dress
This denim dress also has a belted waist and a flattering neckline. It’s got pockets and it’s machine washable. What more can a girl ask for? It’s currently available at Bloomingdale’s and 7 for All Mankind.
