Let’s dive into a topic that concerns many of us: how to look slimmer in a dress. Whether it’s for a special occasion, a summer outing, or simply to boost your confidence, finding ways to create a flattering silhouette is essential.
As a personal stylist, I’ll share some tried-and-tested tips that can help you achieve a leaner appearance. From choosing the right neckline to incorporating clever accessories and making the most of color choices, we’ll cover it all. So, let’s get started and learn how to look effortlessly slim in any dress.
Choose a V-Neck or Scoop Neckline
As you may have read in my series on How to Dress Your Body Type, these particular necklines are universally flattering. They open the neck area nicely. This creates an elongating effect which will make you look longer and leaner.
This dress features a flattering scoop neckline, a defined waist, and a longer hem with a slit. These elements combined create a long, lean silhouette.
Wear the Right Bra
If you haven’t had a bra fitting in the past 6-12 months, I suggest you do this before trying on a ton of summer dresses. As women, our weight and hormones can fluctuate quite a bit over the years. Of course, old bras eventually wear out and stop being supportive. If you’ve got a busted-out bra, replace it. I’ve always had good luck with the fitting departments at Nordstrom and Soma.
Add Layered Necklaces
Wondering how to look slimmer in a dress you already have? Try this tip. Like an open neckline, a necklace draws the eye up. This is especially true with layered necklaces and pendants. I also recommend wearing heavier pendants when you’re sporting flowy fabrics. This makes an indentation that suggests a slimmer silhouette.
This is a versatile layered necklace that will help you look slimmer in a dress. It’s at a great price point too!
Try Shapewear
Personally, I’m not a fan of Spanx. Anytime I’ve tried wearing them, I become nauseous. While others swear by them, it’s just too much compression for me.
Luckily, I’ve found my new holy grail! These shorts by commando hide any lumps, bumps, or sagging skin. The best part? They don’t suffocate you while wearing them. And they do not produce that upper-fat roll that sometimes occurs with other shapewear. I’m also a big fan of the raw hem at the top and bottom. This allows you to cut them so they don’t show while wearing a high slit or a crop top.
Note that these are not the tight, elasticized compression you get with something like Spanx. They are more like soft bike shorts that help your clothing lay nicely.
These shorts are smoothing, yet comfortable.
Go for a Maxi Length
Interestingly, many of my shorter clients think they need to wear short dresses. This couldn’t be further from the truth! No matter what height you are, longer dresses literally elongate your silhouette. A midi or maxi length dress will make you appear longer and leaner. I always prefer maxi dresses with slits for ease of movement.
The length of this maxi dress will give you a taller, slimmer look.
Try a Darker Color
No, you don’t have to limit yourself to black dresses. In fact, you probably want to skip black for photos or special occasions. Fortunately, there are so many other great dark colors for dresses. Typically, darker colors offer a slimming effect. But you have to remember that color is secondary to fit. If the fit is off, a slimming color could still make you appear larger. That said, some of my favorite flattering dress colors include:
- Sienna Brown
- Forest Green
- Cobalt Blue
- Burgundy
- Eggplant Purple
- Navy

Pair Your Dress with Heels
If you need to know how to look slimmer in a dress you already have, look at your shoe collection. I’m very aware we can’t all wear high heels. I have foot issues myself that prevent me from wearing anything above 2.5”. However, even a 1-2” heel on a sandal or a platform pump can give you a great lift.
These gold heels are a comfortable, neutral style that will literally elevate your look.
