Need to know which stores carry plus sizes at Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego?

- Nordstrom – Head to level 2 for career, casual, and dresses. Go to Level 3 for shapewear, lounge, and activewear.
- Macy’s – All plus size categories from workwear to activewear are found on level 3.
- JCPenney – For my budget-conscious readers, get to JCP before it’s gone. Their plus size size selection is on level 1. Unfortunately, this location will close in the fall of 2025.
Why Don’t More Brick-and-mortar Stores Carry Plus Sizes?
Sadly, a lot of stores have reduced in-store inventory in all departments, including plus sizes.
This trend has been detrimental to in-store shopping for petite sizes as well. My clients who are both petite, and plus size, have been hit with the double whammy of limited selections in both departments. It’s no wonder they hired me to help!
While many brands claim that online shopping is preferred by most customers, the stats don’t agree. According to Capital One Shopping Research, in 2023, only 20.5% of apparel purchases were made online. The Statista Research Department’s report reached the same conclusion. Just under 21% of fashion sales were made online.
What does this mean? Well, over 79% of clothing purchases are still made in person. Shocking, I know.
I suspect most stores simply don’t want to pay for the burden of extra floor space. Of course, there’s also payroll for managing several departments. Unfortunately, we are all suffering because of this short-sightedness. We would spend more in-store if the inventory (and service) was better, after all.
Where to Shop for Plus Sizes in Fashion Valley
Despite what big brands may say, most of us still prefer buying our clothing in a physical store. Luckily, there are a handful of retailers that still carry plus sizes in Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego, California.
And, no I’m not going to discuss the usual haunts my plus size clients enjoy, such as Lane Bryant and Torrid. They don’t have stores in that particular mall anyway.
The main places I bring my plus size clients to, as mentioned above, are:
- Nordstrom
- Macy’s
- JCPenney
For my clients in the “cusp” category (sizes 14-18 or XL-XXL) we may also visit:
- J. Jill
- Bloomingdale’s
- Lucky Brand
- Lululemon
Note: For the purposes of this post, I’m also including stores that carry “cusp” sizing. This would be women’s dress sizes 14-16, or an XL-XXL. These sizes sit on the border between straight and plus sizes, depending on the retailer. This can be another category of frustration for some of my clients.
Shopping is a real challenge when you’re between these departments. When you’re too small to be truly plus-sized, and too large to fit comfortably in straight sizes, shopping alone can be overwhelming.
While Fashion Valley has a list of plus size retailers on its website, it’s not accurate.
For example, their list doesn’t include Nordstrom. What?! It’s one of the best places to find plus size clothing in that mall. Another example? It does include Lucky, but they only carry up to an XL in-store.
Where Can I Order Plus Sizes Online that Have Stores in Fashion Valley?
Many of these retailers have extremely limited in-store options, but there is still a benefit to visiting the physical stores. You can order online and pick up in-store. When I do this, I take my items straight to the dressing room to try on then and there.
This way, I can immediately return any items that don’t work. I don’t have to worry about scheduling another trip to the post office or arguing with customer service about a short return window.

While there aren’t dozens of stores offering plus size clothing at Fashion Valley, there are quite a few. Despite an increasingly limited selection, there are gems to be found.
